A survey by The Deposit Protection Service (DPS) claims that a majority of tenants get on well with their residential landlord.
As I strongly believe – property is a people business and there is nobody more important to our property business than our tenants!
About 84 percent of tenants have a ‘harmonious’ relationship with their landlord and a quarter of these went on to call it a ‘fantastic’ relationship. Just 16 percent of those who completed the survey were not happy with their landlord relationship.
DPS claims that this survey should refute the myth that tenants and landlords are always at odds.
The director of The DPS, Kevin Firth says that this outcome should not come as a surprise. He said that since deposit protection legislation was introduced, not many disputes were required to go through the Alternative Dispute Resolution service.
But he adds that it is important to do thorough research to ensure that you are picking the right tenant or landlord in the first place. It never hurts to know a little more about the person who you are dealing with.
For a landlord this means carrying out thorough tenant checks. For tenants it means asking the landlord to speak with current tenants who are in other properties or tenants who have just vacated the property they are considering moving into.
The DPS put in place a tenancy deposit scheme in 2007. The scheme is an effective system which is aimed at safeguarding the deposits on behalf of the tenant and the landlord.
At present the DPS holds in the region of £240 million worth of active deposits.
